Life-altering Quotes from Sweet Magnolias Season 2
Here are some conversations from Sweet Magnolias that hit hard with crucial life and relationship lessons.
Episode 2: Maddie and Nana
Maddie’s kid, Kyle, has been acting up and shutting her out for some time and it’s difficult for her because she’s always part of her kids’ life.
One evening, Kyle insults a neighbor’s child, Annie, a teenage girl who came to visit. Maddie is about to pour the frustration on Kyle but Maddie’s mom, Kyle’s grandmother manages to get her out of the house and they get to have a moving conversation.
With tears rolling down her cheeks Maddie exclaims…
Maddie: What is wrong with him?!
Nana: I…I don’t know. All I know is that it’s gonna take time and patience for him to reach the other side.
Maddie (still crying): Why won’t he let me in? I’m his mother. It’s my job to help him.
Nana: Oh, my sweet girl, if it were only that easy. I wish that we could wipe away every tear our babies cry or kiss the hurt away. I…I wish we could keep our children from falling. But Maddie, we can’t. Kids are gonna fall, and that’s what happened to Kyle. He fell. And you can’t pull him up until he’s ready, no matter how much you want to. And the more you try, the more he is gonna pull you down with him. All you can do is stand there, waiting, with love and attention. He has to be the one to decide that he wants to stand up. That’s not your job. Your job…is to love hin the way I love you.
Episode 2: Helen and her friend, Maddie and Dana Sue
Helen recently had a breakup but her ex doesn’t know she’s pregnant for him. For some reason she doesn’t want to tell him, but her friend, Dana Sue, thinks she should.
While the three friends debate the matter, Dana Sue says something interesting.
Dana Sue: Helen, when are you gonna tell him?
Maddie: Well, I think he’s made his position on the subject crystal clear.
Dana Sue: Well, true, but, I mean…really, like, if he knew that he was going to be a dad, he might change his mind.
Helen: And that is exactly what I don’t want.
Dana Sue: Elaborate!
Helen: I have loved Ryan for years and I have dreamded about having babies with him. But he doesn’t wanna have kids, and I can finally see that, and… I accept that.
Dana Sue: Okay, but, if he knew he were his maybe…
Helen: He’d do it out of duty and not out of love. Helping Isaac has made one thing very clear to me, that no child should have a parent who only cares for them because they’re supposed to. They should have a parent who loves them and… and want them more than anything else in the world. That’s how I feel about this little blessing.
Episode 3: Helen and Erik
Helen is with Erik as she struggles with the pain of having a miscarriage.
Erik: People put too much emphasis on jumping back into the fray. You know, pushing past pain usually means not dealing with it. Just take the time it takes.
Episode 4: Erik and Vernon
Erik is recovering from trauma. One of the men who’s been helping him deal with it is Vernon.
As the two men sit and chat, some powerful words are said.
Vernon: Congratulations.
Erik: ‘Cause I’m having normal conversations with Helen?
Vernon: Yes.
Erik: [Chuckles] Feels less like congratulations and more like “it’s about time.”
Vernon: Erik, this whole process has been about time. But you’ve done some good work and you’re moving forward. That certainly deserves congratulations.
Erik: I’m just not sure how to feel about feeling good.
Vernon: Because you’re whole enough to be vulnerable all over again? You know what we call that feeling, my friend? Being alive.
Episode 6: Kyle and Coach Cal
Kyle has a broken leg and his therapy sessions are causing him so much pain.
He’s wishing he didn’t have to go through so much pain each time. As he walks down the hallway, Coach Cal tells him something profound.
Coach Cal: Sorry, it didn’t go any better today.
Kyle: No. It still hurt. A lot. Pain is pain. I don’t see why I have to keep doing this. This is even worse than going around on Crutches.
Coach Cal: A few years ago I was in a motorcycle accident. I crashed. Really bad. Did a number on myself, dislocated my shoulder, and broke my leg.
Took a long time to recover but the only reason I got better was because I put the work in. But man it hurt, I can’t even describe how much.
Most days, I just wanted to quit, sit on a beach and forget all about it. I knew that ignoring my problems would only make them worse. Because if I ddin’t bite down and endure the pain, my shoulder and my let would never heal right.
Life is full of pain. Physical, emotional, mental, spiritual. Take your pick. And no matter how much you want to, you can’t avoid it. You can quit PT and try to walk around on crutches the rest of your life, But, there will be one day, one play, one girl, something that will make you wish that your leg and knee were strong. But by then, it’ll be too late. Because you made the decision, here and now, to take the easy way out. Is that really what you want to do?
These are just tiny bits of the movie. If the quotes are this good, you can expect the setting, the plot, the characters, the story, and more, to be even better.
